Downtown property purchased to support visual arts, events

(Aug. 9, 2012) – The NGCSU Real Estate Foundation purchased property last week for future use by the university. The area, which includes land and buildings, is adjacent to the Dahlonega campus and is the block bounded by South Chestatee Street, South Park Street, Maple Street, and Choice Ave.  The block contains the former Baptist Church and the former Buisson Arts Center.

The NGCSU Real Estate Foundation has purchased this property on South Chestatee Street.

The NGCSU Real Estate Foundation, a non-profit entity that handles real estate transactions and the financing of certain construction projects on behalf of the university, purchased the property from the Dahlonega Methodist Church.

“The Real Estate Foundation plans to hold the property and rent portions of it to the university for lab space for the Department of Visual Arts, which currently leases space in other areas of Dahlonega,” said Mac McConnell, vice president for business and finance. “Other portions of the property may be used for community events that are coordinated by the Office of Continuing Education.”

McConnell noted that there are no immediate plans for making substantial changes to the property and that a planning effort will begin soon to determine short- and long-term uses for the property and to develop a renovation plan for the various buildings on the site.

“The planning effort will focus on how the Real Estate Foundation can program the space in ways that support public-oriented activities that contribute to Dahlonega’s downtown master plan and are attractive to the public and visitors alike,” he said.
